This exclusive program invites you to visit a renowned pottery artist, located just a 3-minute stroll from the ryokan, where you’ll experience the art of pottery painting. This kiln is generally not open to the public, making this a special tour exclusively for guests staying at Hanamurasaki.
Maikeigama kiln specializes in producing tea ceremony utensils and is currently run by the fourth-generation head, Eiju Yaguchi. Usually, they work exclusively on orders from tea masters, with general sales limited to local visits or exhibitions. The kiln, which is over 100 years old, and the adjoining tea room are protected structures that cannot be built under current laws, preserving traditional construction techniques.
This experience allows you to paint a sake cup from the “Birds Resting” series, a piece that has been passed down through generations, followed by an opportunity to enjoy matcha.
The pottery pieces you painted will be finished by the artist and ready for pickup by your checkout the next day.
